In short. Choosing a UK boarding school from overseas comes down to five things the brochure keeps off the homepage: the pastoral model in numbers (house size, tutor ratio, ISI welfare grade), the real learning and language support, the true all-in cost, the weekend and exeat rhythm, and where leavers actually go across three years. The research always happens at the wrong time of day. A father in Singapore, a diary with no gaps in it, opens his laptop at eleven at night, and every school website tells him the same three things in the same warm font. Excellent pastoral care. A stunning campus. Outstanding results. By midnight he knows less than when he started, because everything sounds identical and nothing lines up side by side.
The problem is not a shortage of information. It is that the information you can see is the information the school chose to show you. Two schools an hour apart can read as twins on their websites and run a child’s life completely differently. Choosing well from four thousand miles away means comparing the parts that never make the homepage, and refusing to let a warm sentence stand in for a fact. Five dimensions carry most of the decision.
The pastoral model, in numbers
“Excellent pastoral care” is on every prospectus, which means it tells you nothing. Turn it into numbers. Ask how many children live in a boarding house, how many house staff and tutors look after them, and how often a tutor formally sits down with each child. A house of forty with a resident houseparent, a matron and six tutors is a different world from a house of seventy with one of each.
Then read the school’s ISI inspection report, and go straight to the grades for pupils’ welfare and personal development. Those are inspected and dated, not written by the marketing team. A school can call its care outstanding on the homepage; the inspectorate either agreed in writing or it did not. Where the two disagree, believe the inspection.
Real support, not the label on it
If your child has mild dyslexia, ADHD, or English as an additional language, “we support all learners” means nothing until you make it concrete. Ask how many specialist teachers the school employs, what the EAL programme actually involves each week, and how many pupils are receiving support right now. Ask what it costs, because learning support and EAL are usually charged on top of fees.
This is the single question that separates schools fastest, because a school that provides support well can describe it in specifics without pausing, and a school that provides it thinly reaches for adjectives. Listen for which one you get.
The true cost, not the headline fee
The advertised fee is the starting line. On top of it sit guardianship, which UK boarding requires for any international pupil under eighteen, flights home for the long holidays and some half-terms, registration and acceptance deposits, uniform and kit, trips, possible support surcharges, and since 2025 the 20% VAT now charged on private-school fees. The rhythm of the term
The UK boarding calendar is not one long stretch. It breaks for three holidays, a half-term in the middle of each, and at some schools a compulsory exeat weekend when the boarding house closes and every child must leave. For a family in the same county that is a minor logistic. For a family eleven time zones away it decides how far from home your child actually feels.
Ask two plain questions: which weekends does the house stay open, and what is the policy on phones and contact home. A full-boarding school where the house is alive at weekends is a genuinely different proposition from one that empties on a Friday. For overseas families, this logistics is pastoral care, and it belongs near the top of the list, not the bottom.
Where leavers actually go
Every school will show you its best university destinations. Ask for three years, not one, and ask for the whole cohort, not the highlights. A single strong Oxbridge year can be one unusual group of children. A steady pattern across three years is a signal you can trust, and it tells you where this school reliably takes a child like yours, which matters far more than one framed photograph in reception.

Verify it beyond the admissions office
Every school can give a smooth answer to every question above. That is what admissions teams are for. So do not stop at the answer. Ask to speak to a current family from your part of the world, ideally one you found yourself rather than one the school picked. Ask to see a boarding house on an ordinary evening, not a rehearsed open day, and watch whether staff know the children by name and mood. If you cannot visit, a video call walking through the house on a normal Tuesday tells you more than any brochure. A school that welcomes that scrutiny is usually a school with nothing to hide.
Where the league table belongs
