About this school

Richard Lord Riche, who founded Felsted in 1564, was Lord Chancellor of England and one of the more supple consciences of the Tudor court, a man whose testimony helped send Thomas More to the scaffold. I mention him not to enjoy the irony at the school's expense but because it makes a plain point: an institution has four and a half centuries to decide what it is for, and what it has become is a fair distance from where it began. So set the founder aside. The question that should occupy an international family is narrower and more expensive to get wrong. Is this the right school for your child, and how would you know before you have paid a term's fees to find out?

Read plainly, that suggests the people who send their children and the people who teach them broadly agree the place works, which is rarer than it sounds and worth something. If contented staff stay, staying is what you want to measure, so ask the school directly how long its house and teaching staff remain, because children are formed by adults who are not quietly looking for the exit.

I say it so you buy the right thing. Felsted offers substance without swagger, which for many families is the better bargain, but only if substance is what you are actually shopping for.

On scale, be careful with the headline. The published figure of around a thousand pupils spans ages three to eighteen and folds in the prep and pre-prep, so the senior boarding community is smaller than that number implies. Felsted offers full, weekly and flexi boarding, an honest concession to the many Essex and London families who want their children close. That flexibility is a genuine kindness, but in our view a heavily weekly-boarding house can have a different texture from a full one, potentially quieter on a Saturday night, and you must see which you are joining. Ask how many board full-time in the sixth form, how many go home at weekends, and what the campus actually feels like on a Sunday. If your child will be here every weekend while the house empties around them, that is a fact you want before September, not after.

There are further questions I cannot answer for you and will not fabricate. Ask for three years of leaver destinations, unedited, so you can see where these children go and what they read. Ask about EAL provision and its cost, about guardianship and airport arrangements, about safeguarding and medical cover. As a registered charity that reinvests its surplus, Felsted is structurally the sort of place that could turn advantage into something wider than itself, so ask about bursaries and how many pupils are here on genuine need. A four-hundred-and-sixty-year-old institution has had ample time to decide whether it serves its pupils or the world beyond them, and the good ones manage both. The 2023 ISI report sits in the file; read the whole thing rather than a summary line from anyone, including me.

My reading is this. Felsted is a serious, forward-looking school that its own families and staff appear to rate highly, strong on forming capable and enterprising young people, honest about its regional reach. It will not launder your child into a famous network, and if that is your aim you should look elsewhere with a clear head. It may instead do the more valuable thing and turn out someone who can build, think and contribute. Verify the outcomes, count the weekend boarders, and then, if the evidence holds, visit unhurried and on an ordinary day.
