The most telling thing about Gresham's may be a building that does not yet exist. A Dyson STEM campus is due to open in 2027, funded by the school's most famous living son, an inventor who turned a domestic annoyance into a global engineering firm. It is a striking gesture, and it is also a promise rather than a fact. A family should be clear about the difference. A capital project financed by philanthropy is not the same thing as good teaching, and a set of laboratories arriving in 2027 does nothing for a child who starts in 2025. So the first thing to do with the Dyson campus is refuse to be dazzled by it. Ask what STEM facilities exist now, which pupils actually use them and how often, who teaches in them, and where recent leavers with a bent for engineering, computer science and physical sciences have gone next. If the school can answer those with specifics, the campus becomes the next chapter of a real story. If it cannot, the campus is architecture doing the work that outcomes should be doing.

What the numbers cannot capture is the shape of the place. It suits a family relaxed about the fact that formation here is real and results are respectable. It is the wrong school for a family whose first and last question is the raw A-level percentage, for a child aiming squarely at the most selective universities unless the school can show recent placement evidence to back the ambition, and for a child who needs a city's density and frequent contact with home. International families in particular should not send a child thousands of miles on atmosphere alone. Establish the senior boarding roll, the proportion of sixth formers who board full-time, the weekend stay-in rate, the EAL provision, the guardianship and exeat arrangements, the airport transfers, and the three-year record of university destinations at home and abroad. And ask the one question that matters most: what kind of eighteen-year-old tends to walk out of the gates. A school that answers that with specifics, rather than adjectives, is a school worth trusting with a childhood.
