About this school

A. W. N. Pugin drew up the plans for the original college, which tells you something about the seriousness with which Ratcliffe took its Catholic identity from the start, and about a school willing to spend on beauty rather than mere shelter. It sits on 200 acres of Leicestershire countryside, a Rosminian foundation that has been educating young people since the middle of the nineteenth century, and it still wears that faith openly. The Rosminian charism, with its stress on charity and on the education of the whole person, is the frame the place says it hangs everything on. What I cannot tell you from the outside is how much of that frame is load-bearing and how much is decoration, and that is precisely the thing a family must go and test.

Here is the honest limit of what a profile can claim. A school with a religious order behind it has a theology underwriting its language and an institution that has argued about the meaning of that language for generations, which is more than most independent schools can say. But origin and architecture do not prove formation. Whether the ethos shapes how a child is actually treated on a wet Tuesday in November, when someone is being unkind or homesick or caught with a vape, is a separate question, and one you should put in plain terms. Ask whether Mass is compulsory and how often. Ask how a Muslim, Hindu, Orthodox or wholly secular boarder experiences the daily religious life, because a school can hold a faith firmly without making outsiders feel like guests in someone else's house, or it can fail to. Ask what service the school requires of pupils rather than merely praises, and what leadership boarders genuinely hold. The answers will tell you whether the charism is operational or ceremonial. My own view is that a coherent moral world is worth a great deal to a growing child, and a good deal more than vague ambient decency, but I would want to see it working before I paid for it.

On the numbers, a word of caution about my own trade. The Boardingly scorecard puts Ratcliffe at 36 out of 100 overall, rated National, on the strength of an Alumni Power reading of 66, a Brains Trust of 55, Bragging Rights of 55 and a Staffroom View of 40. Treat these as a rough map, not a survey of the ground. Alumni Power rewards famous names and public visibility, which flatters household brands and undersells schools that quietly serve international pupils well and produce nobody a newspaper has heard of. The Worldly figure says, plainly, that Ratcliffe has real reach within Britain and little beyond it. That is a description, not an insult. If you want a child plugged into a globe-spanning old network, this is not that school. If a well-connected national school suits you, the 66 on alumni is the honest figure to hold. But I would not let any composite decide anything until the school has handed over the raw facts underneath it.

Those facts begin with boarding, because for an international child the boarding house is the school. The stated age range of 0 to 18 and a roll of 920 almost certainly fold nursery and prep into the headline, so do not read 920 as the size of the senior boarding community, which will be considerably smaller. Ratcliffe offers full, weekly and flexi boarding, and I will not pretend to know the mix, because I do not. What I do know is that the mix determines everything. Ask exactly how many full boarders there are, how many stay on an ordinary weekend, and what happens between Friday evening and Sunday night when the day pupils and the weekly boarders have gone home. Ask whether weekend activity is timetabled or improvised. A child who cannot fly home on a Friday needs a house that stays populated and organised, and no inspection grade tells you whether this one does.

Then the practical machinery that decides whether an international placement thrives or quietly founders. Ask how many international pupils there are and from which countries, and whether they cluster in certain year groups or mix genuinely into the wider school, because a lonely child in a beautiful setting is still lonely. Ask about EAL teaching and university-entry English support. Ask what university destinations the recent leavers reached, by country and by course, and whether the school prepares pupils for medicine, Russell Group, Oxbridge or applications to the United States and Europe as a matter of routine or as an occasional favour. Ask about guardianship expectations, airport transfers, medical and mental-health provision, and how the school communicates with parents several time zones away. On the academics, the 2022 inspection was rated Excellent and A-levels came in at 61 per cent A*-B, respectable rather than blazing. Request the three-year trend rather than one flattering year, and value-added data if they hold it, because a single cohort's average conceals as much as it reveals.

So, unsparingly, who this is for. Ratcliffe should suit a family who want a mid-sized, warm, faith-shaped school in fine countryside, taught competently, with character and service treated as more than slogans, and who are comfortable with a visible Catholic ethos and willing to verify how it actually operates before assuming it produces something superior. It should suit a child who will flourish in a settled community rather than a large or ferociously competitive one. It will suit badly the family hunting a global brand or the very highest grades. And it may suit badly, though only your own questions will settle this, the international child who needs a full-boarding house that stays busy at weekends, a substantial cohort from similar backgrounds, and muscular English and university support. Do not decide from the prospectus, the Pugin chapel or the scorecard. Decide from verified boarding numbers, weekend occupancy, the lived experience of pupils who are not Catholic and not British, and the destinations of last year's leavers. I would make the visit a weekend, not a weekday, and I would arrive with that list of questions in hand and refuse to leave until they were answered.
